Wiki Editing Guidelines
Purpose[edit]
The Explorer's Compendium is intended to store information about Signal Cartel corporation, its services, activities and members.
Access[edit]
Generally, only Signal Cartel members, authenticated via Eve Online SSO, can view and edit the wiki. Pages with Public: prefix are visible to any Internet user. Editing of some pages may be restricted to a group of people. Comments can be made on all pages on a respective "talk" page accessible via Discussion link right under the page title.
Content Structure[edit]
Wiki pages are not required to form any specific structure, like a tree. Each page can be independent and discoverable via search.
If pages need to be grouped there are two ways to do it:
- Categories. Wiki categories act as tags and each page may belong to several categories. Any user can create a category and add a page to it. The list of a page's categories appears at the bottom of the page. Clicking on a category link displays a list of all pages in that category.
- Namespaces. A page may have a prefix ending with a colon (:) which indicates a namespace to which it belongs. Namespaces can only be created by a wiki administrator. It is also possible to restrict editing access to pages within a namespace. Currently, we use the following namespaces:
Prefix | Description | Editing restricted? |
---|---|---|
Public | Publicly available pages | Yes |
Policy | Corp policies | Yes |
Archive | Deprecated pages | No |
CS | Information about Central Services | Yes |
TS | Information about Thera Scanning service | Yes |
ESR | Information about Eve-Scout Rescue program | No |
AD | Information about Anoikis Division | No |
ENG | Information about Engineering Division and its products, like Allison | No |
SCA | Information about Signal Cartel Academy and its courses | No |
FOD | Information about Fleet Operations Division. No OpSec data allowed! | No |
SW | Information about Splunkworks/Official Corp Fittings | Yes |
1420 | Publicly available TripTiks | Yes |
An example of a page which belongs to a namespace is Public:Orientation Guide - First 24 Hours.
Creating a Page[edit]
Search for the full page name, including any namespace prefix, using the search field at the top of any wiki page. If the page does not exist, wiki will suggest to create it. Click the create link and start editing.
Style[edit]
Generally, wiki pages should be written from a third-person point of view. Writing in the first person is only appropriate on user pages. Second-person point of view can be used in guides and instructions.
Formatting[edit]
Wiki pages are formatted by using wiki markup. The following manuals provide instructions and examples of wiki formatting:
If an image is owned by an editor, or if its license does not prohibit copying, then it can be uploaded to this website as described on Managing files page.
Editors can also learn formatting techniques by examining source code of pages on this wiki. If a page is editable, its source code can be revealed by clicking Edit link under its title.
Discussion[edit]
Each wiki page has an associated discussion page which can be accessed by clicking Discussion link under the page title. Discussion space is used to ask questions and propose changes. It is accessible to all users even if editing of the page itself is restricted.
For each new discussion subject an author should click New Topic button after which the wiki will create a new section on the page. Every question and answer should be signed and timestamped by the author using ~~~~ markup at the end of the text. To separate the question and responses, a colon (:) can be put at the beginning of each reply which will appear indented. The depth of indentation can be increased by adding more colons.
